EDU4113 – Spring Session – 2012

Welcome to Spring Session @ NDNU! I am looking forward to discussing technology applications in education with you for the next five sessions. The purpose of this post is to overview the basics of this course’s sessions and give you the “lay of the land” as pertains to this course.

  • First, all of the information for this course is contained in this blog. Should you need to find something just enter the appropriate term in the “search” field. Also, use the “tags” located to the right or the drop-down menu at the top of this blog.
  • Next, all of your information will be posted on your own blog. This includes your reflections, checklist items and your final project. There is no need to email me with content or assignment information. (Of course you may email me with questions as needed.)
  • Class session 4 will be conducted off site at St. Raymond’s School in Menlo Park. While the focus of the lesson is to work with a SmartBoard, other parts of the course will be covered at that time. Your attendance is expected at every course meeting.
As topics arise I will answer questions in class, and online, so please do your best to check the course information as we go ahead. And as always, please email me with any questions you may have.
Cheers,
Colin

This blog is dedicated to supporting students enrolled in EDU4113 (Technology Applications in Teaching), taught at Notre Dame de Namur University, in Belmont, CA. The intent of this approach is to model the possibilities for interacting within educational environments: teachers with students, teachers with teachers, teachers with the community. I am excited to start this course with you all and I look forward to collaborating with you on this project. Be prepared to operate in a paperless mode, as I will be asking you to consider the advantages and disadvantages of this approach. As always, I see this course as a conversation, one whose goal is to support you in becoming a more successful teacher. The information will be updated throughout the course to reflect what is covered. Be sure and check back to make sure that youhave the most recent content. I am excited to support you on your journey through this required class. Please email me if you have questions about the course.

Course Description

California has adopted Technology Standards that define computer-based technology use in classrooms. This course ensures that all teacher candidates understand and are able to use appropriate computer based technology to facilitate the teaching and learning process. In addition to the California Level I Standards, the course covers issues surrounding technology use by society in general and education in particular. Also, several Teacher Performance Expectations (TPEs) from the California Standards of Quality and Effectiveness for Professional Teacher Preparation Programs are addressed in this course.

Grading Guidelines

The course will assign grades according to the following guidelines (the percentages are approximate and the actual point distribution will depend upon the assigned work):

  • Attendance (25%)
  • Technology Checklist (25%)
  • Reflections (25%)
  • Final Project (25%)

Course Grading Scale

Grade Range
A+ 97.0 – 100.0
A 93.0 – 96.9
A- 90.0 – 92.9
B+ 87.0 – 89.9

B- 80.0 – 82.9

Course Approach

It is a unique challenge to offer a course that helps classroom teachers grow in their abilities as technology facilitators and innovators. First, it is important to acknowledge the wide range of technology skills that are present in the students and the inherent range of needs as a result. It is also necessary to recognize the unique characteristics of teaching at the primary, middle, and secondary levels. Finally, we must consider different types of skills in our journey: those that facilitate interactions between teachers, those that assist teachers working with students, and those that help each teacher grow as an explorer-innovator. The course is an attempt to provide a framework for students to grow in their abilities in each of these manners.

Course Assignments

There are three types of assignments in this course. More detail will be provided for each type of assignment

  • Technology Checklist – This is a list of assignments to be completed by each student outside of class. Each is an example of a skill that is potentially useful in the current life of a teacher. These assignments are to be completed individually and evaluated in person by the teacher during class. For those students that have already mastered a specific skill, it is acceptable to bring in the file to show the instructor. For those that need assistance, time will be provided during class for group or individual instruction. All completed assignments will be posted on the student blog, except where noted on the checklist item.
  • Reflection Writing – These writing assignments will be posted as part of an ongoing effort to foster self-reflection in the students. These will be submitted for peer review and you are expected to read and comment on the writing of others. All completed reflections will be posted on the student blog, with each post being the equivalent of at least a typed page of content. The assigned reflections are those indicated in the weekly agenda postings.
  • Final Project – Each student will complete a final project to be submitted and presented to the rest of the students. The project should detail how you will use technology tools to work with your students. All of the requirements for the final project are posted on this course blog.

Attendance

This is a one-unit course that only meets a total of five times. As a result, attendance, punctuality, and active participation at all class meetings is important.  Any absence will negatively affect your final grade in the course. Please notify the instructor in advance of an expected absence. Should you be absent, it is your responsibility to catch up on content missed (please consult the course blog).

Academic Honesty

Academic honesty is a cornerstone of our values at NDNU. If any words or ideas used in an assignment do not represent your original words or ideas, you must cite all relevant sources and make clear the extent to which such sources were used. Consult the NDNU Student Handbook regarding consequences of misrepresenting your work.

Students with Documented Disabilities

If you have a learning disability or other condition or circumstance that may affect your work in this class, please bring it to the instructor’s attention as soon as possible so that appropriate adjustments can be made. Note that individual instructors do not give accommodations to students – students who require an accommodation must make an appointment with the Academic Success Center. Please contact Dr. Peggy Koshland Crane at (650)508-3670 or mcrane@ndnu.edu for further information.

Course Skills

SkillsThe following skills are necessary to be able to complete the course

  • linking within your blog
    • In the “edit” mode for your page, select the word you wish to serve as a link to another page
    • Click on the “hyperlink” button at the top of the editing window.
    • This will bring up a window that allows you to paste a URL for the page where you wish to link
    • In this location, paste the URL of the blog post (or other web page) to which you wish to link.
    • Clicking “OK” (or equivalent) will finish this task
  • embedding an object in your blog
    • To embed an object into your blog, you will need to create a post and start editing in the “HTML” mode.
    • Then you will need to retrieve the “enbed” code from the object you wish to show in your blog. This is found in different locations depending on what you wish to embed.
    • Once you obtain the code, simply copy that and paste this into the blog post you are creating. After saving the post, the blog post will show the object (i.e. embedded video) and not the code.
  • Linking between slides of your PowerPoint
    • Linking between PowerPoint slides makes using them much more functional, less linear.
    • To create a link, simply highlight the word you wish to serve as a link on a slide.
    • Then, “right click” the word you have selected and choose the “hyperlink” option.
    • After that, you can choose to link the word to another slide, a web page, or even a file on your computer.
  • controlling sharing in YouTube, Google Docs etc
    • when editing a document (Google Docs), click on the “Share” button in the upper right corner.
    • Take a look at the “Sharing settings” option, where you can add an individual person or change the overall permissions for viewing the document.
    • Change the permissions to be “Public” to enable the embedding feature.
    • Then in the “Share” menu, select the “Publish to the web” option, finding the “HTML to embed in a web page” code.
    • This feature will follow a similar pattern with other media, and all that you need to do is look for the “Share” feature.
